Wood’s Powr-Grip (WPG) has hit a new milestone: 60 years in business. The Laurel, Montana-based manufacturer of vacuum lifting tools and equipment was founded in 1964 by Howard Wood.

Wood’s penchant for tinkering and mechanical engineering led to the invention of a vacuum tool that held motor valves in place. The tool contributed to his next creation, a handheld vacuum cup for maneuvering glass. The suction cup’s popularity led to the founding of WPG.

The company is now led by a third generation of Wood family members, including Bryan Wood, president and CEO; Barry Wood, vice president of marketing and sales; and Brad Wood, production manager.

“I’m extremely humbled thinking back to the hard work and sacrifices of our parents and grandparents, who were so determined to make glass handling safer and easier,” said Bryan. “It’s a passion that’s created many long-term friendships in our industry these past 60 years. It inspires us today to provide the type of customer service you would want a friend to have. It also motivates us to continue innovating.”

Company officials said the focus on innovation has helped WPG earn recognition throughout the glass industry. The company has introduced and innovated various products, including Powr-Grip hand cups and below-the-hook vacuum lifters.
