Woodgrain Millwork Fined for Violating Stormwater Permit

Woodgrain Millwork has been fined $6,820 by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) for “failing to adequately monitor stormwater leaving the facility.”

Woodgrain Millwork Inc.’s stormwater discharge permit requires the company to take four sets of water samples, visually monitor stormwater discharge and report the findings back to DEQ each year, according to a statement from DEQ. The company did not submit a report for the past monitoring year, causing DEQ to conclude that the company did not perform the required sampling and monitoring, the release says.

“The combination of sampling and monitoring is necessary to ensure that stormwater discharges meet water quality benchmarks set out in the facility’s permit,” writes DEQ. “Proper sampling and monitoring can reveal the presence of industrial pollutants that could enter public streams and rivers.”

According to the release, Woodgrain Millwork has appealed the penalty. The company had not responded to DWM’s request for comment at press time.
