This is not the first time Oklahoma has been struck by a devastating tornado. In May 1999, an F5 tornado hit Oklahoma City and a few window manufacturers to whom we spoke referenced that storm today.

Don Young Co., headquartered in Dallas, Texas, has a wholesale branch in Oklahoma City, and John Schwind, branch manager, told DWM he expects to have a similar situation to what happened back in 1999.

He recalls that in the week following that storm all was quiet and then after a week everyone was overloaded with quotes.

“Everyone got cranky and we were working 20-hour days,” he says. “Right now everyone is in shock. We will get very busy and phones will be ringing off the wall.”

Thermal Windows Inc. is based in Tulsa and has a sales/distribution center in Oklahoma City. Terry Newcomb, marketing director, reports that the office was unharmed by the storms.

“John Batts, our general manager there, has notified the local TV stations that his facility is available as a mid-town drop-off point for water and other donations,” says Newcomb.

Newcomb also referred back to the 1999 tornado and noted that its Oklahoma City office, “is 20 miles from Moore, where we have installed several hundred of windows since the 1999 tornado.”

On the Twitter feeds, several industry companies talked about the need for more safe rooms, while also sharing that their thoughts and prayers are with those devastated by the storm.

President Obama held a press conference this morning to discuss the aftermath of the tornado and alluded to the upcoming hurricane season.

“We don’t yet know the full extent of the damage from this week’s storm. We don’t know both the human and economic losses that may have occurred,” he said. “We know that severe rumbling of bad weather through much of the country still continues. And we’re also preparing for Hurricane season that begins next week.”
