January 25th, 2024 by Editor

The latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing are beginning to steady on a month-to-month basis, but remain mostly up over the previous year.

In December, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category continued to climb, rising by 0.7% from the previous month and up 2.1% compared to the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification began with a plateau from November 2023, but dropped by 5.8% on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows also stagnated from November and dropped by 0.5% from the December 2022 report. Prices for metal doors and frames also flatlined from November to December, but improved 2.1% over the previous year. Prices for wood window units continued the course of no change from the previous month and trended up 4.5% on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications increased in December 2023, up 0.1% from November, carrying over to an increase of 1.5% above December 2022 pricing.

The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials dropped in both areas, down 0.2% compared to November 2023, and down 5.4% from the previous December, while prices for fiberglass plastic products increased by 0.8% from the previous month and by 8.9% on a year-over-year basis.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, remained steady from November to December, dropping by 1.7% from December 2022.
