PPI: Prices Continue Upward in July

August 23rd, 2023 by Editor

The latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) was released last week and it shows most prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing continuing to rise, not only from June to July, but on a year-over-year basis.

In July, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category rose by 0.3% from the previous month and up 6.9% compared to the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification continued the positive trend with a 0.8% bump from June 2023, and 4.2% increase on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows decreased by 0.2% from June but clocked a slight increase, exactly 1%, over the July 2022 report. Prices for metal doors and frames followed suit almost to a T, dropping 0.1% from June to July and improving 1.2% since last year. While the prices for wood window units held steady from June, compared to last year the segment increased 12.1% on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications also flat-lined in July 2023 and recorded an increase of 6% over July 2022 pricing.

The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials dropped across both measures, down 3.1% over June 2023, and falling 16% from July of last year. Meanwhile, prices for fiberglass plastic products increased by 0.7% from the previous month and had an increase of 11.4% over the previous July.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, showed no change from June to July, but rose by 1.5% from July 2022.
