PPI: Prices Continue the Roller Coaster in October

November 29th, 2023 by Editor

The latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) was released ahead of Thanksgiving, showing inconsistent prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing. Most showed no change from September to October 2023, but numbers were a mixed bag on a year-over-year basis.

In October, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category continued to climb, rising if only by 0.1% from the previous month and up 1.9% compared to the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification was the first split in numbers, continuing the slow-but-positive trend with a 0.3% increase from September 2023, but dropping 5.7% compared to October 2022. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows stagnated from September and dropped by 0.3% over the report from the same time last year. Prices for metal doors and frames also showed no change from September to October but increased 2.4% over the same time in 2022. Prices for wood window units followed suit, flat-lining from September to October but recorded an increase of 4.5% on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications dropped in October 2023, by 0.2% from September, but remained up 1.7% over October 2022 pricing.

The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials slid 0.7% over September 2023, as well as 11.8% from October of last year. Prices for fiberglass plastic products flatlined from the previous month but had an increase of 9.2% over the previous October.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, also stagnated from September to October, while rising by 0.5% compared to October 2022.
