PPI: Prices Barely Change in November but Rise for the Year

Prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing went largely unchanged in November, compared to October, but increased slightly on a year-over-year basis according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

In November, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category rose by 0.1% from the previous month and 2.2% from November 2018. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification also increased by 0.8% from October 2019 and grew by 1.9% on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows stayed the same from the October 2019 level, but grew by 4.6% from the November 2018 report a year ago. Metal doors and frames remained the same in November as well and grew 1.3% for the year. Prices for wood window units were also unchanged for another month, but are up 6% on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications are the same as October 2019, but down 0.6% since November 2018.

The price of thermoplastic resins and plastic materials was down in November by 0.6% from October 2019 and down by 10% from November 2018. Price for fiberglass plastic products rose slightly, by 0.2% since October and 0.6% year-over-year.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, also went unchanged from October to November, at 0.7% higher than November 2018.
