Not Much Change in June PPI but Still More than Last Year

July 25th, 2019 by Kyra Thompson

Prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing were fairly consistent in June 2019, but have increased on a year-over-year basis according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

In June, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category dipped by 0.3% from the previous month, but is up 0.1% from June 2018. According to the BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification dropped 0.8% from May 2019, but is up 0.2% on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows stayed the same as its May 2019 level. It’s up 8.8% from the June 2018 report a year ago. Metal doors and frames showed an increase of 0.2% in June. The category is up 4% for the year. Prices for wood window units remained the same from May to June 2019 but are up 6% year-over-year. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications were unchanged from May 2019 but are up 0.7% since June 2018.

The price of thermoplastic resins and plastic materials dropped 7.5% in June, but are up 2.5% from June 2018. Fiberglass plastic product prices rose 2% since last month but are down 0.8% for the year.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, fell 0.1% from May to June. However, that price is 3.4% higher than in June 2018.
