How to Successfully Train New Employees

Our industry continues on pace for solid growth again this year.  And with another strong year evolving, we’re all having to add new employees.  This is a terrific effect from the growing building products sector.  It doesn’t matter if you are a manufacturer or a home improvement company — we all seem to be hiring more people.

A byproduct of hiring more people is training the new recruits.  Some of us have had to dust off the training manual, because for the past several years we have tried to do more tasks with less employees.

When training new employees, I subscribe to this philosophy:  I imagine the new people are like my son or daughter.  I treat new employees like I would want my son or daughter to be treated when starting a new job.

Here is what I mean.  New recruits have “wide eyes” when they are starting a new job.  They are trying to take in the training, study how the organization works, understand what challenges they will encounter, determine how to solve those challenges, and learn how to do a good job.  They also are trying to figure out how they fit in to the organization, their role, their co-workers and the organization’s personality.

I once read that the three most stressful things you will encounter in life are getting married, moving and starting a new job.  Starting a new job is a challenge for both employer and employee. To make this transition easier for everyone, my key points with new employees are:

  • Be patient
  • Train well and often
  • Treat them like you would a son or daughter
  • Provide them the tools they need to be successful

Finally, new employees are hearing things for the first time.  Take it slow, and make sure they are “getting it.”  It will take more than once for them to grasp things but the ‘keepers’ will pick it up and make the organization and themselves more successful.
