October 18th, 2019 by Kyra Thompson

Prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing have seen a slight decrease in September 2019 but continue to go up on a year-over-year basis, according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

In September, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category fell by 0.2% from the previous month but rose 1% on a year-over-year basis. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification also dropped by 0.5% from August 2019 but rose 2.2% on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows stayed the same from the August 2019 level and grew 5.1% from the September 2018 report a year ago. Metal doors and frames rose by 0.2% in August and by 1.2% year over year. Prices for wood window units remain the same for another month this year but are up again 6% year over year. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications are down 1% from August 2019 and down 0.5% compared to September 2018.

The price of thermoplastic resins and plastic materials is up this month by 0.4% from August 2019 but down by 8.6% compared to a year earlier. Prices for fiberglass plastic products went up slightly, by 0.2%, since August and rose 1.1% year over year.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, increased from August to September by 0.1% and that price is 1.9% higher than it was in September 2018.
