The process of showing up on Google when your customers are searching for “window replacement” or “door repair” can be pretty complex when you get down to the technical nuts and bolts, but there are a bunch of things you can do yourself to stack the deck in your favor. By themselves these tips may not rocket you to No. 1, but as best practices they can sure help.
While building a sound SEO (Search Engine Optimization) strategy requires certain level of expertise that only experienced professionals can provide, I’ll discuss a few DIY ways to increase your chances of success. But before we do that, let’s take a quick look at the relevance of keywords for SEO.
The word “window” is NOT a keyword. Single keywords are too generic and can mean anything to any number of people…and to search engines. The phrase “window repair service” or “glass door replacement dallas” is how Google can relate what you sell, to what consumers are looking for.
Through a process called indexing, Google uses website crawlers to scan and catalog all the content present on every website. Every time an online user searches for a keyword or phrase, Google refers to its index and provides the results by evaluating the sites according to their relevance to that particular keyword.

You can perform some basic SEO management of the content on your site even without having advanced SEO skills. All you need is some basic concepts that you can easily gain from online resources. The following tips will help you maintain the SEO-friendliness of your website.
Tip No. 1: Use keywords multiple times, but avoid overstuffing. There is no exact formula, but it’s advisable to use your target keywords in all your web page titles. They should appear at least three times on your short webpages, and six times on lengthier ones. Make sure the content on your website doesn’t lose its readability or natural flow while incorporating the keywords. Also, it’s important not to overdo the keyword usage, because Google is looking for that.
Power Tip: Google loves synonyms! Yes, Google is smart enough to recognize different words and phrases that mean the same thing. Using synonyms is a natural writing style and will make your copy more enjoyable to read, and thus convince Google that you are writing for an audience and not for Google.
Tip No. 2: Create genuinely good content. There’s a huge difference between creating content just for the sake of SEO, and doing it with a genuine intent to add value to your audience and visitors. Believe it or not, your readers are smart enough to tell the difference!
Tip No. 3: Take care about keyword placement. It’s best to use the main keywords in the first sentence, or as early as possible in the first paragraph. Also use them in titles, headings, and sub-heads where they make sense.
Tip No. 4: Steer clear of duplicate content. It’s essential to have near 100 percent original and unique content on each page. Contrary to popular belief, there is no actual penalty for using content that appears elsewhere on the Internet; however, Google will ignore your content if it has already been indexed on another website. Your readers may enjoy the content that you plagiarized from someone else’s website, but Google will give you absolutely no credit for it.
Thant “no penalty” thing? Well, I’m afraid that doesn’t apply to content you duplicate on your own site. Believe it or not, Google WILL penalize you for duplicating your own copy on other pages of your own website. They really don’t like when you screw with them.
Tip No. 5: Your location is important. More than likely your door and window shop caters to consumers in a local area, so make sure to mention the areas and the locations where your business provides services. This will give Google a clue as to where they should show your content, and thus boost your visibility among those local customers.
There are thousands of businesses vying for the top spots on Google and other search engines. This essentially means that your small business is pitted against big brands and large corporations. SEO demands an ongoing effort and specific techniques, including content creation, business blogging, link building, and social media syndication, but it’s possible to maintain a decent Google ranking by following these DIY tips.
